What Is Tedlar® PVF Film?

Tedlar® is DuPont’s trade name for polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) — a high-performance fluoropolymer first commercialized in the 1960s and used in everything from aircraft cabin interiors to photovoltaic backsheets.

PVF film is prized for three reasons: it’s chemically inert (nothing sticks or reacts with it), it’s extraordinarily weather-stable (fluorine–carbon bonds don’t break down in sunlight), and it has a naturally low-energy surface (paints, inks, and grime wipe off rather than soaking in).

Laminated over a printed vinyl graphic, Tedlar® transfers those properties to your print — turning a vulnerable graphic into a surface that can survive a decade of vandalism, weather, and scrubbing.

Tedlar® vs. Other Overlaminates

Standard cast or calendered vinyl overlaminates may protect against UV and abrasion, but fail quickly when attacked with solvents — the same cleaners used to remove spray paint will dull or haze the vinyl.

Polyester anti-graffiti laminates perform better than vinyl but can absorb solvent-based markers over time and tend to have a shorter outdoor life.

Tedlar® PVF is in a class of its own: the fluoropolymer is both a UV barrier and a chemical barrier, so a single film does the work of two separate products. For long-dwell outdoor graphics in high-risk public areas, Tedlar® is the benchmark other anti-graffiti laminates are measured against.

Installation & Handling

• 1. Let printed vinyl outgas per ink-manufacturer spec (24–48 hrs for solvent). Thermal transfer prints can be laminated immediately.
• 2. Feed print and laminate through a cold or low-heat roll laminator at light, even tension.
• 3. Install the finished graphic with standard wet or dry methods per the base vinyl.

Tip: Tedlar® has a low-energy surface — always print first, then laminate. Nothing adheres well on top of PVF.

Cleaning & Graffiti Removal

Most graffiti — spray paint, marker, ink tags — wipes off Tedlar® with a soft cloth and an appropriate solvent:

• - Mineral spirits
• - Isopropyl alcohol
• - DuPont-recommended commercial graffiti remover
• - Citrus-based cleaners for adhesive residue

Always test in an inconspicuous area first. Avoid abrasive pads, razor blades, and aggressive alkaline cleaners.

FAQ — Durability

Is Tedlar® laminate the same as a standard UV overlaminate?
No. A standard UV overlaminate protects against sun exposure only. Tedlar® adds a full fluoropolymer anti-graffiti layer on top of that UV protection — one film, two jobs.

How long will Tedlar® last outdoors?
Under typical vertical outdoor exposure in temperate climates, expect 7–10+ years of service life. Actual durability depends on base vinyl, ink set, orientation, and climate.

Can I use Tedlar® on vehicle wraps?
Yes — it’s commonly specified on fleet, transit, and municipal vehicles. For wrapped compound curves, confirm the base vinyl and laminate are rated for the contour you need.

FAQ — Compatibility

What printers and inks is it compatible with?
Gerber Edge thermal transfer, eco-solvent, UV-curable, and latex inkjet systems. Always confirm outgassing time before laminating.

Does anything adhere on top of Tedlar®?
No — Tedlar® has a low-energy, non-stick surface by design. Always print your graphic first, then laminate. Do not apply heat-transfer vinyl, cast decals, or overlays on top of the laminate.
